CLUB PROFILE

garden party at quinta da fonte

The Royal British Club Lisbon, Portugal, which was founded in 1888 and obtained its royal patronage in 1903 after a state visit to Portugal by King Edward VII, is an important social institution in Lisbon for the British and international communities. His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is patron of the Club and His Excellency The British Ambassador to Portugal is the current President.

The Club is a private members' club, with an international membership, serving the social needs of its members within Portugal and abroad. The Club has not had any premises for many years but events have been held at hotels and restaurants, including some very successful Charity Summer Balls and Gala Dinners.

The membership includes nationals from Portugal, the United Kingdom and a large number of other countries, mainly resident in the Lisbon/Estoril/Cascais/Sintra areas. There are also "Country" (persons normally resident in Portugal but outside a one hundred kilometre radius of Lisbon), "Overseas" (persons not normally resident in Portugal) and "life" members.

An initial entrance fee is charged on acceptance as a member of the Club; subsequently, an annual subscription, depending on the category of application, is also payable with reduced subscriptions for husband and wife.

The RBC has a number of affiliated clubs overseas, in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada and other countries who welcome members to visit and use their facilities.

Informal lunches are organised in Lisbon where members meet old friends and welcome new faces. Other events such as a Summer Garden Party, a Pub Quiz Night and a lunch in the Cascais area are also held during the year. Discounts for members with hotels, restaurants and other service organisations within Portugal are available.

The Club has a Golfing Society which holds monthly competitions, followed by lunch, which is often sponsored in part by Club members or associated companies.

A fund-raising Christmas lunch is held in December and donations are given to a chosen charity, usually a children's home.

The Club is managed by an elected Executive Committee, the majority of whom, under the Club's Rules, must be of British nationality. The day-to-day running of the Club is done by a Club Secretary.

A book on the Club's history is available. For further information please contact the Club Secretary on:
