Club Profile

The Royal British Club, Portugal

The Royal British Club, Lisbon, Portugal, which was founded in 1888 and obtained its royal patronage in 1903 after a state visit to Portugal by King Edward VII, is an important social institution in the Lisbon / Cascais area for the British and international communities. His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was patron of the Club until his death in 2021 and His/Her Excellency the British Ambassador to Portugal is our President.

The Club is a private members’ club, serving the social and business needs of its members within Portugal and abroad. Over the past years the Club’s activities have included informal lunches in Lisbon and Cascais some with speakers, a traditional Christmas lunch, cocktail parties at the British Embassy, a wine tasting event at a local vineyard, an evening presentation by a specialist in Portuguese cheese and a formal Gala Dinner at the Hotel Palacio in Estoril to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.

The membership includes nationals from Portugal, the United Kingdom and a number of other countries, mainly resident in the Lisbon/Estoril/Cascais/Sintra areas as well as in the Algarve. Non-members are welcome to attend the Club’s events with a view to joining at a later stage.

The Club has an agreement with the Grémio Literário, a prestigious Lisbon Club in the Chiado area, whereby RBC members are allowed, upon presentation of their membership card, to use their beautiful traditional Portuguese facilities, including the restaurant and bar.

The Club has a number of affiliated clubs overseas, in the United Kingdom, Ireland and other countries, which welcome members to visit and use their facilities.

Discounts for members at some venues are available upon presentation of the membership card.

Our Club events offer an opportunity for members and their guests to interact and develop useful social and business contacts – newcomers to the area are welcomed by existing members, providing these contacts.

ROYAL BRITISH CLUB GOLFING SOCIETY:

The Club has a Golfing Society, the Royal British Club Golfing Society, which holds monthly competitions, followed by lunch, which is often sponsored by Club members or companies. For a separate joining fee, Club members can be part of the Golfing Society.
